Cleveland sports in 2012 – Fourth Quarter

2012_12_kent_hazellSo 2012 has come and gone without another championship from any of Cleveland’s teams.

While there were no titles to celebrate, there were still plenty of stories, from firings to trades, to too many losses and too few wins.

Our annual review of the year in Cleveland sports concludes with the fourth quarter of the year- from a historic run by Kent State’s football team, to the end of another disappointing Browns season and the start of a rebuild by the Cleveland Indians – and everything else that makes Cleveland sports such a joy to follow.

Zeller’s injury takes a bit off the Waiters, Irving dynamic

Bad news for the Cleveland Cavaliers and rookie center Tyler Zeller, who will be out for a while after suffering a concussion and fractured cheekbone during Monday night’s win versus the L.A. Clippers.

Zeller was hit with a wayward elbow from the Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan with 5:39 left in the game. X-rays revealed a non-displaced fracture of his left orbital cheekbone and Zeller returned to Cleveland to be evaluated further, according to a team press release. He will have to get clearance from a league doctor before he can start playing again as the Cavs are following the NBA’s concussion protocol process.

Are the Cavs building a dream backcourt?

The NBA season is still a little more than three months away, but we like what we’re hearing about the Cleveland Cavaliers backcourt combination of Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters.

Irving has been making headlines in the past week for his play as a member of USA Basketball’s Select team, which is in Las Vegas helping the U.S. Olympic team get ready for the Summer Olympics in London.

In a recent scrimmage, Irving scored 11 of his team’s 14 points, leading Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo to say that Irving is “that far advanced in terms of his talent, it appears. He’s made a good showing here. He had a terrific rookie season in the NBA and certainly he will be one of the leading candidates going forward.”

And then there is Waiters, the Cavs top draft pick out of Syracuse.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, an assistant coach for Team USA, thinks Irving and Waiters are going to be a dynamic pairing – sooner rather than later.

“I think they’ve got the possibility to have the best backcourt in the NBA fairly soon,” Boeheim told The Beacon Journal. “I’m sure some people may think they went out on a limb (in drafting Waiters). I don’t think they went out on a limb at all. I think he was clearly the best player (available). I’ll be shocked if he’s not.”

Irving is also looking forward to playing with Waiters.

“Once I started seeing him at camps, we both earned each other’s respect for each other’s games,” Irving said. “Having him on the team now is a special opportunity and I feel like this is the future of our program. He’s an exciting player. You guys have no idea what we have.”

Irving is joining the Cavs Summer League squad in Las Vegas so he and Waiters can begin working together. The team will play five games, staring with Sunday’s tilt against Charlotte.

The Browns should just give up now

With nothing better to do while waiting for the opening of training camps across the NFL, Pro Football Talk decided to release preseason power rankings for the league’s 32 teams.

And, of course, they put the Browns at No. 32.

That’s right, the Browns are supposedly worse than the Colts, who have rookie quarterback Andrew Luck throwing to 33-year-old wide receiver Reggie Wayne and not much else; worse than Jacksonville with Blaine Gabbert and tarps covering thousands of unsold seats; worse than a Miami team that is considering starting David Gerrard at quarterback; worse than the Vikings, Rams and every other crappy team in the league.

It’s so bad, the Browns may as well give up on the season and start focusing on who they will pick with the No. 1 overall selection in the 2013 draft.

Making lemonade out of lemons

Welcome to Cleveland Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller.

Boy, we never thought we’d be writing those two names today. But it was that kind of night for the Cavs who had a unique night at the NBA Draft. And everyone knows how much we love unique here in Cleveland.

With the fourth pick, the Cavs select …

Unlike last year, when the Cleveland Cavaliers held the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft and targeted point guard Kyrie Irving from the moment they won the draft lottery, no one really knows what the Cavs will do in tonight’s draft.

We’re (pretty) sure that Cavs general manager Chris Grant knows what he wants to do but what he will do with the Cavs selection at No. 4 may hinge on one question:
How bad do the Cavs really want Florida shooting guard Bradley Beal? (If they want him at all.)
According to NBA.com, Beal has a:
“combination of attributes, most notably his ability to score, his intelligence and his strong work ethic. As good as he was as a freshman in college, he’ll get that much better because he’s not afraid to put the time in to improve. He’s a big-time scorer, who, although his 3-point stroke was a bit inconsistent in college, is a great shooter. He’s also a strong finisher. And as an added bonus, he’s a great rebounder.”

America’s Love Affair with Uncle Drew

America has fallen in love with Uncle Drew.

During the NBA finals, more than 11.7 million people went online to find out that Uncle Drew, a character in a Pepsi Max ad campaign, is really the Cavs’ Kyrie Irving, according to The New York Times:

The video was filmed at Clark’s Pond Court in Bloomfield, N.J., which is close to where Irving’s father lives. Local players were gathered and told that Pepsi Max was filming a documentary on a character named Kevin who they claimed was a youth basketball coach. Other than Irving, Kevin and the player whose injury leads to Uncle Drew entering the game, no one on the court knew that it was actually Irving under the makeup.

The video was posted two days after Irving was officially announced as the rookie of the year. With no media behind it, the video garnered 10 million views. With 80 percent of the viewers watching four minutes into the five-minute video, and the key target demographic of males from 25 to 54 accounting for most of those views, Pepsi Max decided to create a series of trailers to the video to be shown during the N.B.A. finals, representing a significant advertising purchase. Even so, the decision was made to stay true to the viral roots of the video by not giving away anything in the 30-second spots.

The paper reports that the ads received a 98 percent like-rate on YouTube and made the front page of Reddit. During Game 5 of the finals, Irving was trending worldwide on Twitter, under both his name and Uncle Drew’s name.
