Can Anyone Follow this Logic?

Earlier this year we talked about how older members of the media are scared that soccer will become popular in this country, with Chris Russo on Sirius leading the way by saying “no one cares” – meaning he doesn’t care – about the upcoming World Cup.

But, of course, TV ratings blew that idea out of the water with the final game between Spain and the Netherlands bringing in more than 15.5 million viewers.

Russo was back at it again this week, in response to an article in USA Today that compared the local TV ratings on Sunday to NFL games vs. Major League Baseball. Despite the NFL crushing baseball in the ratings, Russo said “it doesn’t matter” because the people he talks to “all want to talk about baseball.”

So let’s see if we can follow the logic here: TV ratings are high for the World Cup but people don’t care, even though they are watching; TV ratings are low for the baseball playoffs but everyone wants to talk about it even though they are not watching.

Glad we cleared that up. As Cleveland Frowns would say, “DERP!”

  1. could not agree more.

not only with the game itself. baseball is boring. it _is_ a pastime and works when framed as such. i came to this realization when my son started doing sports. i had no problem whatsoever with his 7am sat hockey practice. even practice is fun to watch. but with his baseball… no way i'm giving 3 hours of prime summer weekend afternoon to watch baseball.

BUT TITUS. the thing that baseball should borrow from the EPL is relegation. do 3 12-team leagues. if they're not going to a salary cap, least they can do is tier the teams appropriately.

but i didnt come here to jibber-jabber about baseball. i came here to post this:

    1 kanick 20.0
    2 pullo 19.5
    3 cuuugs 18.5
    4 sneeda 18.0
    5 peter 16.5
    6 smitty 14.5
    7 edge 14.0
    8 brosef 12.5
    8 chuck 12.5
    10 chris 12.0
    11 cfkap 11.5
    12 believe 11.0
    13 frowns 9.0
    14 zara. 8.5
    15 pml.. 7.5

that's right. front-loaded this week. mission accomplished, game on. just made your three foot putt six feet. 🙂

  2. Yes, DERP.

There's also that Russo happens to be based in New York. Shouldn't be surprising that folks want to talk about MLB there.

  3. Relegation would definitely work in baseball and really well in the NBA. It would be interesting to see a league try that; of course my childhood would have been spent watching the Indians never come close to making the top division.

The thing that bugs me about talk show hosts is they can shape the message any way they want because they control who they let in. They can only let baseball calls through to prove that “everyone” wants to talk baseball.

Russo is one of the better ones, despite that. Certainly better than anyone we have locally.

Don't get too comfortable there on your perch Jim, we're working on another week of killer picks.
