The most important lesson of free agency for the Browns

browns-lombardi-football0d114-1If you only read one other story today Cleveland Browns fans, it should be this one by Bill Barnwell at Grantland.

In it, Barnwell writes about how more talent is becoming available at below-market rates in NFL free agency, which officially opens today at 4 p.m.

If you don’t have time to read the entire article, here is the most-relevant part:

“Almost nobody scouts well enough to overcome huge value gaps …, which is why the league’s smarter teams go out of their way to acquire additional picks and are happy to take 90 percent of the player for 50 percent of the price in free agency. What those smart teams will do in this new economy is — very simply — be patient. The true stars will disappear off the market early, and the dumber teams will pay a premium for talent to lock them up in the first 24 to 48 hours, but the smart teams will wait. Even if it’s just a week, antsy players will see the open slots beginning to fill up around them and settle for far less than they would have at the opening of free agency.”

Browns have plenty of options when free agency opens Tuesday

NFL: Preseason-Detroit Lions at Cleveland BrownsThe AFC North is a harsh mistress; after all, it’s not known as the NFL’s Group of Death for nothing.

And that’s a lesson that Cleveland Browns CEO Joe Banner hopefully learned during the fall and one that he needs to remember as the Browns get ready for the official opening of free agency on Tuesday.

It takes a special type of player to be successful in this division; it’s not for everyone. Targeting players that you know can perform in the pressure cooker is a strategy that should be part of the decision-making process for the Browns. After all, that’s been a successful strategy for the Ravens and Steelers for the past decade.

To find out who those players could be (and, no, Jerome Harrison is not one of them), head over to The Cleveland Fan.

Would the Browns consider signing Wes Welker?

wes welker brownsWith free agency starting next week in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns have an opportunity to start filling some important holes on the roster.

And while the defense would appear to be the primary area to focus on, when you are coming off yet another 5-11 season there are plenty of areas that could use help on both sides of the ball.

Which brings us to New England wide receiver Wes Welker.

Are the Browns starting to lose Cleveland?

temp4X9E1834--nfl_mezz_1280_1024It’s a universal truth that Cleveland has been Browns town since the team first joined the NFL for the 1950 season.

Through (long-ago) championships and (more-recent) crushing defeats, regime changes, coaching changes and more quarterbacks than we care to think about, Cleveland has always bled Orange and Brown. (And while it is cute that the Indians are trying to convince everyone, primarily themselves, that this is a Tribe Town, they need to come back when they draw more than 5,000 fans for weeknight games in April and May. Then we can talk.)

But we’re starting to wonder if the Browns are losing their influence, however, following the announcement that the team will no longer charge a Personal Seat License to new season-ticket purchase.

Report: Browns target to undergo knee procedure

2013_03_steve_breaston_kneeIt looks like the Cleveland Browns may have dodged a bullet with free agent wide receiver Steve Breaston.

The Browns hosted the five-year veteran this week but Breaston left town without a contract and headed to Pittsburgh, where it was assumed he would sign a contract and reunite with Todd Haley, his former coach in Kansas City and the Steelers current offensive coordinator. (Interestingly, no rumors about Breaston wanting to reunite with Brian Daboll; one year with him in KC was enough).

Turns out that not only does it look like Breaston won’t be signing with the Browns or the Steelers, he may not be playing at all in 2013 as ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Breaston will be traveling to Germany to undergo Regenokine treatment to repair knee inflammation and early arthritic symptoms.

Yikes!

Weeden in ’13 campaign gaining steam

Brandon+Weeden+Cleveland+Browns+v+Dallas+Cowboys+eKx2mZUNPf-lThe Cleveland Browns moved one step closer on Wednesday to having Brandon Weeden be the starting quarterback when the 2013 NFL season kicks off in September.

Just like presidential candidates dropping off the board during campaign season, another potential threat to Weeden was taken out of the picture when Kansas City reportedly made a deal for San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith.

The Chiefs will reportedly give up their second-round pick in this year’s draft and a future conditional pick (that could be as high as a second-round selection) to acquire Smith, a quarterback who was the first overall selection in the 2005 draft and one that has posted only one solid season in his career.

Just as we started to get comfortable …

brandon-weeden-no-luck-at-all-qb… about the quarterback situation for the Cleveland Browns, the team has a day like today.

The off-season was moving along OK and it looked like the Browns were going to be able to focus on filling some important holes on defense, rather than worry about the quarterback position. And that’s saying something for a franchise that has seen 11 different players start at the quarterback position in Week 1 since the franchise returned in 1999.

Over the weekend, CEO Joe Banner, while not coming out and saying that incumbent starter Brandon Weeden will be the guy under center when the season starts this fall, sure made it sound as if the Browns were willing to see what Weeden can do in Norv Turner’s NFL-caliber offense.

When is 89 percent not really 89 percent?

Unable not the Same as UnwillingWith the start of free agency in the NFL just 16 days away, we are going to be hearing lots of talk about what the Cleveland Browns may or may not do to upgrade the roster.

And there is one question we are sure to hear asked in some form over and over again:

“Don’t the Browns have to spend 89 percent of the salary cap this year?”

The answer is no, they don’t. But for some reason the question keeps coming up, so let’s review the answer one more time:

No team in the NFL – and yes, that includes the Browns – has to spend 89 percent of the salary cap this year or any year.

Love ‘ya Tribe, but Cleveland remains a Browns Town

20110717_inq_sellouts17-dThe Cleveland Indians rolled out their marketing slogan for the 2013 season on Friday.

The updated motto – This is a Tribe town – “captures perfectly the passion we feel for our fans and the community we serve,” Indians president Mark Shapiro said on the team’s website.

The campaign will be backed by a series of videos of Tribe players and personalities explaining why they chose to be a part of the organization and the city of Cleveland, including radio play-by-play man Tom Hamilton, new players Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn, and current coach and former player Sandy Alomar Jr. (no word, yet, on if Swisher’s video will feature him laughing while rolling around on a large pile of money).
