Just like the Tribe “Drew” it up

Drew StubbsIt wasn’t always pretty, see their four errors, but the Cleveland Indians pulled out the series win on Sunday as Drew Stubbs hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and and the Tribe went on to win 3-1.

“I felt like we were trying every way we could to give it away,” Stubbs said. “We hung in there, we battled and were able to do enough to win. An ugly win is as good as a pretty win.”

After going 6-3 on their recent road trip, the Indians came home and took two-of-three from the Twins. That leaves the Indians heading into Monday’s off day just 1.5 games behind Oakland in the chase for a Wild Card spot.

It doesn’t seem to matter if the national media write off the Indians, or if the fans can’t seem to get behind this squad, this team seems determined to find a way to stay in the playoff hunt.

Sixteen truths about the Browns schedule in 2013

2013_08_browns_scheduleIn less than three weeks, the Cleveland Browns will take the field for the 2013 NFL season facing one of the easier schedules, at least on paper, in the league.

The Browns will play the 21st easiest schedule, based on the 2012 record of their opponents, this fall. Their home schedule is the 25th easiest, but their road schedule is the 11th toughest.

While past performance does not indicate future success, except in the Browns case as they have somehow managed to win five or fewer games eight times in the past 10 years, it’s interesting to think about what the Browns will be facing this year.

So let’s run through the schedule, week by week, with 16 truths – one for each opponent – to help Browns fans sleep better at night. Many of the truths are offense related, which makes the anticipation of Ray Horton unleashing his new defense that much more tantalizing.

All set? Then let’s get rolling over at The Cleveland Fan.

Rob Chudzinski confirms Brandon Weeden is the man

Brandon+Weeden+Cleveland+Browns+v+Dallas+Cowboys+eKx2mZUNPf-lWe first started talking about this in January, when we proposed the idea that Brandon Weeden should be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in 2013.

We reiterated the point in February, when we noted that the Weeden in ’13 campaign was picking up momentum and that the Browns should turn their focus to filling other positions on the roster.

In March, the signing of backup quarterback Jason Campbell helped to solidify the campaign.

The Browns resisted the urge to do anything crazy in April’s NFL Draft.

At the start of training camp, we noted that having Norv Turner as offensive coordinator is a pretty good way to settle down the quarterback position.

In the first two preseason friendlies, Weeden has done everything you would expect an NFL starting quarterback to do.

So it was no surprise, really, when Browns coach Rob Chudzinski announced that Weeden will be the starting quarterback for the Browns this fall.

“It was important for me and for us to go through the process … that started in April in the meetings, carried out into OTAs on the field, the multiple minicamps that we had, the number of weeks in training camp that we had, as well as the first two preseason games so that we could get these guys and see them react to a lot of different situations that would come up and how they would handle them and so forth,” Chudzinski said in announcing the decision.

“Based on this process, Brandon has earned this job.  That’s extremely important to me that he did.  He has gained my complete trust.  He has gained his teammates complete trust and this organization’s trust.  We are all behind him and we will all be there to support him.”

Good job, coach. But next time, save yourself a lot of time and headaches and just ask us. We’re here for you.

Oh, Moffitt … won’t see him no more

browns moffitt trade voidRemember on Monday, when the Cleveland Browns traded defensive lineman Brian Sanford to Seattle for offensive guard John Moffitt?

And how we all thought the former third-round pick would compete with seventh-round draft pick Garrett Gilkey to fill the hole at right guard created by the injuries to Shawn Lauvao and Jason Pinkston?

Yeah, never mind.

The Browns voided the trade on Tuesday after Moffitt reportedly failed his physical. Sanford came back to Cleveland, Moffitt went back to Seattle before the Seahawks eventually traded him to Denver.

And the Browns are back to staring at the possibility of a seventh-round draft pick out of Chadron State being the opening day starter at right guard.

Browns make a move to help patch the offensive line

John-Moffitt-Seattle-SeahawksWith the Cleveland Browns facing the prospect of being without guards Shawn Lauvao and Jason Pinkston until sometime after the start of the regular season, the team needed to do something to help keep quarterback Brandon Weeden upright.

The Browns clearly were not comfortable going into the season with just Garrett Gilkey, a seventh-round draft pick out of Chadron State, holding down the spot and, having a surplus of spare parts at defensive line, acquired John Moffitt from Seattle in exchange for Brian Sanford.

Moffitt, who is 6-foot-4, 319-pounds, is in his third year out of Wisconsin. That’s the good part, as if there is one thing that Wisconsin knows how to do it is create offensive linemen.

He started nine games his rookie year but suffered torn ligaments in his knee and had season-ending knee surgery. Last year it was an elbow injury in training camp that required surgery. So that part is not so good.

Moffitt was also one of five Seattle players suspended since 2011 for using performance enhancing drugs; in Moffitt’s cae it was Adderall. He was also banned from a Seattle mall property for twice getting caught urinating in public. Those parts are really not very good.

If nothing else, Moffitt adds much-needed depth on the offensive line. Worst case is he holds the fort down until Lauvao and/or Pinkston can return to the field. Best case, the change of scenery, and playing with a talented group of offensive linemen, helps him play like the player that was part of a Wisconsin offensive line that dominated Ohio State in 2010.

The Indians are starting to look ready for the off season, not the post-season

tribe santana oaklandA week ago, we wondered if it was time to call the season on the Cleveland Indians, or if the Tribe still had one more stretch of good baseball in them.

Seven days and six games later, we are a little closer to the answer and it is not one that Tribe fans are going to want to hear.

Following Sunday’s loss in Oakland, the Indians are 4.5 games back in the Wild Card standings (forget the division, the Tigers already took care of that). The Indians really needed to sweep the A’s, a team they are chasing for a playoff berth, but after losing two-of-three – and with just 38 games remaining in the season – the playoffs may prove to be just a far enough out of the Tribe’s reach.

The good, the bad and the injured for the Browns

browns mingo detroitThe Cleveland Browns are now halfway through the preseason and there is a lot for Browns fans to like, at least when it comes to the actual on-the-field product.

While it is only the preseason, the defense is running around making plays, the offense looks functional, and the return game looks like it can be a weapon.

But there are also some items to be concerned about following Thursday night’s exhibition win over the Detroit Lions.

We look at the good and the bad after two preseason friendlies in our latest post at The Cleveland Fan.

Can Liverpool move up the table in 2013-14?

European Football - UEFA Champions League - Semi-Final 2nd Leg MD12 - Liverpool FC v Chelsea FCLiverpool opens the 2013-14 Premier League season – and Brendan Rodgers second season in charge – on Saturday when they host Stoke City.

After finishing in seventh place last season, the Reds are going on their fourth consecutive season without Champions League football, something that once seemed unfathomable for a club that is synonymous with European football.

So what will this season bring for Liverpool?

We start looking for answers in our latest post at World Soccer Talk.

Are the Indians done for the year?

Is it OK to call the season over for the Cleveland Indians? Is Sunday’s comeback win the start of another streak? Or was the win just a reprieve until until the inevitable becomes reality?

We need answers after the Tribe rallied from five runs down on Sunday to beat the Los Angeles Angels and salvage one win on the seven-game homestand.

The Indians opened the week just three games out of first place in the A.L. Central and holding the second Wild Card spot. After being swept by the Tigers in the biggest series since 2007, and losing two-of-three to the Angels, the Indians head off to Minnesota seven games behind Detroit and four games back in the Wild Card.

Time for Tribe to forget Detroit, focus on wild card

tribe swept by detroitIt’s all over for the Cleveland Indians and it is still early in August.

No, it’s not the season we are referring to but the Tribe’s hopes of catching Detroit for the A.L. Central Division.

After being swept in the four-game series by the Tigers in some pretty dramatic (and ugly) ways, the race for the division title is effectively over.

But unlike the last two years when the Indians stumbled in the second half of the season, this year’s squad still has something to play for as they are still just three games back in the wild card standings. Now that Detroit is out of the town, the Indians need to put the last four days behind them and get back to business. Because there is still a lot to play for over the final weeks of the season.

We look to figure it all out over at The Cleveland Fan.
