Cleveland sports in 2012 – Third Quarter

haslam weedenSo 2012 has come and gone without another championship from any of Cleveland’s teams.

While there were no titles to celebrate, there were still plenty of stories, from firings to trades, to too many losses and too few wins.

Our look at the year in Cleveland sports continues with the second quarter of the year – from the opening of the Indians season, to the NFL Draft and NBA Draft and everything else that makes Cleveland sports such a joy to follow.

Chip Kelly is intriguing, but questions still remain

2013_01_chip_kelly_brownsWith Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner reportedly in Arizona waiting for their turn to bend a knee and kiss the visor of Oregon coach Chip Kelly, it seems like a good time to look at what Browns fans are in store for if the team makes Kelly the franchise’s sixth head coach since 1999.

So what do we know about Kelly?

He’s 45-7 in four seasons at Oregon, where the Ducks play a highly entertaining brand of offensive football at a high pace, averaging more than 50 points a game. By spreading the field, Oregon forces opposing defenses to defend the entire field – not just the area between the tackles.

The Ducks averaged 84.4 offensive plays a game this season; the average NFL team is at 66.8.

Kelly’s frenetic approach also applies to practice, allowing the Ducks to get in more repetitions than other teams in the same amount of time.

Several NFL teams, most notably New England, have adopted parts of Kelly’s offensive system – not the whole system, but parts of it (that’s a key point).

There’s one more thing – Kelly has never spent a single minute, in any capacity, in the NFL.

And that should be reason enough to give Browns fans pause before they go all-in on Kelly as the next coach.

We start to sort out the Chip Kelly question at The Cleveland Fan.

Cleveland sports in 2012 – First Quarter

_JHR7683--nfl_large_580_1000So 2012 has come and gone without another championship from any of Cleveland’s teams.

While there were no titles to celebrate, there were still plenty of stories, from firings to trades, to too many losses and too few wins.

Let’s take a look at the year in Cleveland sports, starting with the first quarter of the year – from the Browns failed pursuit of Robert Griffin III, to the moves made by the Indians and everything else that makes Cleveland sports such a joy to follow.

What’s the next move Jimmy?

12057000-mmmainThe Cleveland Browns made it official on Monday, firing coach Pat Shurmur after two seasons and general manager Tom Heckert after just three years.

Cue up the calliope music, the carousel is spinning once again in Berea.

As we learned with Mike Brown, Eric Mangini and Manny Acta, firing the coach is the easy part. Finding a replacement that is actually an improvement has proven to be far more difficult.

Do Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner have want it takes to finally get it right with a new coach?

We start looking for answers at The Cleveland Fan.

Browns wrap up season in predictable fashion

browns31-02The Cleveland Browns closed out the 2012 NFL season – and what is likely to be the Pat Shurmur era – with a 24-10 loss on Sunday to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The loss means the Browns finish the season at 5-11, the fifth year in a row that they have won five or fewer games. Cleveland also went 1-7 on the road for the second consecutive year. It was also the fourth time in the past five years that the Browns have ended the season with a loss to the Steelers.

So, here we are, at the end of another disappointing season for the Browns. The momentum and enthusiasm of the three-game winning streak seems so long ago as it quickly evaporated during yet another season-ending losing streak.

Browns vs. Steelers – Week 17

4X9E1696--nfl_large_580_1000The Cleveland Browns head to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers in the final game of the 2012 NFL season.

Thaddeus Lewis, who has never taken a snap at the NFL level, will start at quarterback for the Browns, with Brandon Weeden and Colt McCoy both out with shoulder injuries.

And Lewis won’t have Trent Richardson to hand the ball to, as the rookie running back will miss the game with an ankle injury.

Yeah, this is going to be some kind of party.

And it is one of those weeks where we are thankful for NFL Sunday Ticket.

Browns vs. Broncos – Week 16

denver-_279_20464--nfl_large_580_1000The Cleveland Browns hit the road for the final two games of the 2012 NFL season.

After a thoroughly disappointing showing last week against Washington, these may not only be the last two games of the season, but also the final two games of coach Pat Shurmur’s tenure in Cleveland, and possibly for general manager Tom Heckert as well.

Can the Browns bounce back against a Denver team that has posted 11 wins against teams that are a combined 32 games under .500?

Let’s see if we can find out at The Cleveland Fan.

Weeden ready to let it rip

temp4X9E1461--nfl_mezz_1280_1024With two games to go in the Cleveland Browns season, quarterback Brandon Weeden may have finally realized that freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose.

Coming off a disappointing game in the home finale against Washington – and with rumors swirling that the Browns may want to replace Weeden next season with Ryan Mallett (career stats: four pass attempts, one completion and one interception ) – the rookie is ready to let it fly.

“If you get in the mindset of thinking about being too cautious with throws, that’s when you’re a little more errant,” Weeden said. “You’re not as accurate; you’re not as aggressive, but there’s times where you’ve got to be smart. Whether it’s in the red zone or after a big play, you have to pick your spots. At this point, I’ve just got to let it fly. From here on out, just let it rip and be aggressive to take shots.”

To that we say: what took you so long?

Beware the anonymous, single-source story, Browns fans

heckert-draft-10-jgjpg-b455db635d3c46beAnother day, another round of rumors surrounding the future of Cleveland Browns general manager Tom Heckert.

First off comes Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk, who writes that a “league source” told him that if the Browns fire Heckert it will be because he was not willing to mortgage the team’s future in a pre-draft trade for Robert Griffin III.

So, if this “report” is to be believed, Jimmy Haslam and Joe Banner will hold Heckert responsible for something that occurred before they were even involved with the team and with having no knowledge about any of the discussions the Browns had about a potential trade.

We guess, since they can only fire Mike Holmgren once, they need someone else to kick around.
