Q&A with Cleveland Browns drumline member Will Talaba

will talaba drum lineWill Talaba is a talented musician and educator.

He teaches at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, conducting the school’s Symphonic Winds, Reserve Jazz Project and the Pep Band. He also teaches at Avon High School, serving as assistant marching band director, as well as the school’s indoor drumline program coordinator and director.

But it is on Sundays when the Cleveland Browns play at home that is most interesting (at least for our purposes), as Will can be found on the sidelines at First Energy Stadium as a member of the Cleveland Browns Drumline. The drumline has five bass drums, five tenors and 10 snares (Will plays snare.)

Will graciously agreed to sit down for a virtual Q&A about the experience.

Browns take a tumble on the road to respectability

Jason CampbellFifteen minutes. All it took was 15 minutes on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium for the Cleveland Browns to throw away the team’s biggest opportunity in six years.

And even by the Browns standards it was pretty absurd.

The Browns took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to the defense – highlighted by Joe Haden’s interception return for a touchdown – as the Cleveland made Cincinnati starting quarterback Andy Dalton look like the average (at best) quarterback that he is.

But the Browns squandered two opportunities when they could not convert a first-and-goal at the Cincinnati two-yard line into a touchdown and then, on their next possession, could not turn a first-and-10 at the Bengals 14-yard line into touchdowns. Instead, the Browns settled for field goals, which anyone watching the Browns for long enough knew was going to be a problem down the line.

Browns vs. Bengals – Week 10

2013_11_browns_bengals_previewThe Cleveland Browns head to Cincinnati on Sunday to take on the Bengals. More importantly, the game presents the Browns with the opportunity to truly enter the playoff picture in the AFC.

A win puts the Browns just a half-game behind the Bengals and gives Cleveland a season sweep of Cincinnati, an important tie-breaker in what may be a tight race for the AFC North division title.

The Browns come into the game off a big home win against Baltimore, while the Bengals have lost consecutive overtime games on the road.

Can the Browns win in Cincinnati for the first time since 2008 and sweep the Bengals for the first time since 2002?

Well, that’s the question, isn’t it?

We break it all down in our preview at The Cleveland Fan.

Talking Browns football with graphic designer Eric Fischer

Browns Halloween MaskEric Fischer is an artist, graphic designer and U.S. Navy veteran who has worked in the design field for nearly 20 years. He is currently a creative director for a manufacturing company and also works as a freelance designer in his spare time. He is a life long, unapologetic and die hard Cleveland sports fan.

While he currently lives in Atlanta, Eric was born and raised in Cleveland. And while you may not have heard of him (yet), if you have been to a Cleveland Browns home game this year you’ve seen his work.

When the opposing team has the ball and it is third down, the theme song from the movie Halloween plays over the speakers at First Energy Stadium and an image of Michael Myers in Cleveland Browns face paint flashes on the scoreboard.

Eric designed the image for the Browns and he graciously agreed to sit down for a virtual Q&A about the design process, how he connected with the Browns and a few other topics.

Browns at the bye: Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down?

2013_11_cameron_byeWhile the rest of the AFC North spends the weekend getting beat up, the Cleveland Browns are enjoying their bye week while gearing up for what have unexpectedly turned into an important final seven games of the season.

The Browns find themselves at 4-5 and just on the outside of the final playoff position in the AFC. While a 4-5 record is generally not something that should get fans overly excited, it’s different with this year’s Browns team.

“This bye week gives us a chance to look at our personnel, take a good look,” Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said earlier in the week. “Are we doing the right things with them? Are there some things that we can do better and put them in better position? Because as coach, I believe that we always want to put our guys and try to put our guys in the best position for them to succeed, which will give us the best chance of succeeding.”

Chudzinski is on to something with using the bye week to evaluate where the Browns currently stand and how they got here, so let’s do the same with a Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down take in our latest at The Cleveland Fan.

Can the defense carry the Browns to the playoffs?

browns defense ravensA week after Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton proclaimed that the defense had turned a corner, it appears that he may be right.

And if he is, it could mean a final seven-game stretch that could push the Browns into the playoffs.

If the Browns can bring the type of defensive pressure on Cincinnati’s Andy Dalton that they did against Kansas City’s Alex Smith and Baltimore’s Joe Flacco, they stand a chance of beating the Bengals in Cincinnati for the first time since 2008.

Pull out a win against the Bengals and suddenly things could get very interesting for the Browns.

We take a look at what the defense has been up to plus a few other nuggets from the Browns Week 9 win against Baltimore in our latest at The Cleveland Fan.

Defense carries the Browns past the Ravens

browns defeat ravensThe Cleveland Browns beat the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, 24-18, the Browns first win over the Ravens in 12 tries.

And they have Ray Horton and the defense to thank for it.

The game turned into one that showcased why the Browns brought Horton to town to oversee the defense, which deserves a lot of credit for making sure the Browns walked off the field late on Sunday with an actual victory rather than yet another moral victory.

We have some quick thoughts in our game summary at The Cleveland Fan.

Browns vs. Ravens – Week 9

2013_11_browns_ravens_previewThe Cleveland Browns return home on Sunday to take on the Baltimore Ravens in the first of three consecutive games against AFC North Division foes.

The Browns are coming off a game in Kansas City where they fell behind to the Chiefs, staged a rally, only crossed midfield once in their final five drives of the game, and walked out of Arrowhead Stadium the possessors of a moral victory to much jubilation.

Can the Browns pick up an actual victory against a Ravens team that the Browns have not beaten in their last 11 tries?

We start to find out in our game preview at The Cleveland Fan.

On Josh Gordon, bad quarterbacks and misquotes

browns keep josh gordonThe Cleveland Browns made the right move on Tuesday, deciding to take the risk and hold on to second-year wide receiver Josh Gordon.

The NFL trading deadline passed at 4 p.m. and Gordon remained on the roster despite weeks of speculation that he would be moved out of town in large part because he is firmly entrenched in the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

While the Browns are taking a risk that Gordon will not receive another suspension down the road, it was the right move to make. The team already had enough trouble putting points on the board and Gordon is one of only two players on offensive (along with tight end Jordan Cameron) that opposing defenses need to think about come Sunday afternoon.

We look at Gordon and a few other things from Week 8 in our latest post at The Cleveland Fan.

New quarterback, same results for the Browns

browns lose chiefsThe Cleveland Browns lost to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday by the score of 23-17.

It was the Browns third consecutive defeat, dropping them to 3-5 as the 2013 NFL season hits the halfway mark. Meanwhile, the Chiefs remained the league’s lone unbeaten team as they climbed to 8-0.

More importantly, it was the sixth time this season that the Browns scored 20 points or less on offense.

Apparently the Jason Campbell-led offensive revolution will have to wait at least one more week before it commences.

We break down all the fun in our latest post at The Cleveland Fan.
