Wrapping up the Browns season-opening loss to Miami

browns dolphins wrapThe Cleveland Browns lost their season-opening game on Sunday to Miami, the ninth-consecutive they have opened the season with a loss and the 14th time they have pulled off that feat since 1999.

Sunday’s game had it all for Browns fans: from the continued misuse of running back Trent Richardson, to bad line play, bad quarterback play and much more.

We take a last look at Sunday’s debacle in our latest post at The Cleveland Fan.

Browns drop season opener; so what else is new?

browns dolphins sackWell, that certainly did not go the way the Cleveland Browns drew it up.

The Browns lost their season-opening game on Sunday against Miami in a very familiar fashion. The loss was the team’s ninth consecutive to open the season – the longest current streak in the NFL – and the Browns are now 1-14 to open the season since 1999.

The offense was ineffective, the defense looked good at times but has issues in the secondary and, as usual, not much went right.

We go into the gory details at The Cleveland Fan.

Browns vs. Dolphins – Week 1

browns dolphins sheard previewA little more than eight months after we last saw them in real game action, the Cleveland Browns return to the field today to open the 2013 NFL season.

The Browns will be at home, naturally, taking on the Miami Dolphins. Cleveland is 1-13 in season openers since returning to the NFL in 1999, a streak that would be nice to see them snap against the Dolphins.

Today’s game will mark the first game for Rob Chudzinski as an NFL head coach, the fifth time we have seen a coach make his NFL debut with the Orange and Brown since 1999.

Can Brandon Weeden avoid a repeat of last season’s opening game? What will a healthy Trent Richardson be able to do? Can Ray Horton’s attacking defense bring the pain on Miami quarterback Ryan Tannehill – even without first-round draft pick Barkevious Mingo?

We start looking for the answers in our Week 1 preview at The Cleveland Fan.

What does 2013 have in store for the Cleveland Browns?

2013_08_browns_scheduleThe NFL kicks off tonight as Denver hosts Baltimore.

On Sunday, it starts for real for the Cleveland Browns.

So what does the NFL have in store for everyone’s favorite team in 2013? A playoff berth? A shot at grabbing the No. 1 pick in next spring’s NFL Draft and Jadeveon Clowney, the presumed top pick?

The answer probably lies somewhere in the middle, which, while potentially frustrating, may end up not being the worst thing to happen to the Browns.

The Cleveland Fan brought together an august group of football experts to discuss what we will see from the Orange and Brown this fall.

Check out what we have to say starting … now at The Cleveland Fan.

Browns decide to embrace the unpredictable at kicking position

browns billy cundiffThe Cleveland Browns, apparently deciding that predictability at the kicking position is for chumps, signed veteran place kicker Billy Cundiff to a contract on Tuesday.

Cundiff was a Pro Bowl kicker back in 2010, for what that honor is worth, after making 26-of-29 field goals for Baltimore. But things definitely took a turn for the worse once he returned from Hawaii.

In 2011, he missed nine field goals in the regular season before famously missing a 32-yard field goal that would have sent the AFC Championship Game into overtime.

The Ravens released him after that season and he bounced around between San Francisco (where he did not attempt a kick) to Washington (where was just seven-of-12) before being released.

For his career, Cundiff has made just 75 percent of his field goals and has only converted more than 80 percent in a single season once. By comparison, Phil Dawson, the kicker that Cundiff is replacing, has made 84 percent of his field goals in his career and has converted less than 80 percent just once since 2002 – and that was seven years ago.

And that is the biggest problem – Billy Cundiff is not Phil Dawson.

Nick HagadoneFor a few weeks now we’ve been wondering if the Cleveland Indians have one last run in them to stay in the playoff race or if it’s time to call the season.

The last week may have provided us with the answer.

A three-game sweep in Atlanta … a weekend to forget in Detroit that was saved only by an improbably Mike Aviles grand slam … a series-opening loss to Baltimore where Justin Masterson left in the second inning with an injury … and, well, we’re ready to call it a season.

Sure, it is conceivable that the Tribe can stay in the playoff race (just like it is conceivable that the Cleveland Browns could win the AFC North Division this fall), with the hope resting on the weak slate of opponents left on the schedule once Baltimore leaves town. After all, the Tribe is “only” four games out of a Wild Card spot (but that could change for the negative by the time the Orioles leave town).

The legacy of Owen Marecic

Owen MarecicThe Cleveland Browns continued to make moves on Tuesday as they released several players to get down to the NFL-mandated roster limit of 75 players.

In a bit of a surprising move, the club released third-year fullback Owen Marecic, one of the players the Browns drafted with a pick obtained in the Julio Jones draft day trade with Atlanta.

Marecic had his ups and downs with the Browns, but what fan can forget that career-high three-yard run against Miami in Week 3 of his rookie season? Or how he matched that with another three-yard burst against St. Louis in Week 9?

Who among us could have imagined that run would be the last time Marecic would gain a rushing yard while wearing the Orange and Brown?

A look at a few items that warrant attention but not necessarily a full post …

Just like the Tribe “Drew” it up

Drew StubbsIt wasn’t always pretty, see their four errors, but the Cleveland Indians pulled out the series win on Sunday as Drew Stubbs hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and and the Tribe went on to win 3-1.

“I felt like we were trying every way we could to give it away,” Stubbs said. “We hung in there, we battled and were able to do enough to win. An ugly win is as good as a pretty win.”

After going 6-3 on their recent road trip, the Indians came home and took two-of-three from the Twins. That leaves the Indians heading into Monday’s off day just 1.5 games behind Oakland in the chase for a Wild Card spot.

It doesn’t seem to matter if the national media write off the Indians, or if the fans can’t seem to get behind this squad, this team seems determined to find a way to stay in the playoff hunt.

Sixteen truths about the Browns schedule in 2013

2013_08_browns_scheduleIn less than three weeks, the Cleveland Browns will take the field for the 2013 NFL season facing one of the easier schedules, at least on paper, in the league.

The Browns will play the 21st easiest schedule, based on the 2012 record of their opponents, this fall. Their home schedule is the 25th easiest, but their road schedule is the 11th toughest.

While past performance does not indicate future success, except in the Browns case as they have somehow managed to win five or fewer games eight times in the past 10 years, it’s interesting to think about what the Browns will be facing this year.

So let’s run through the schedule, week by week, with 16 truths – one for each opponent – to help Browns fans sleep better at night. Many of the truths are offense related, which makes the anticipation of Ray Horton unleashing his new defense that much more tantalizing.

All set? Then let’s get rolling over at The Cleveland Fan.

Rob Chudzinski confirms Brandon Weeden is the man

Brandon+Weeden+Cleveland+Browns+v+Dallas+Cowboys+eKx2mZUNPf-lWe first started talking about this in January, when we proposed the idea that Brandon Weeden should be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in 2013.

We reiterated the point in February, when we noted that the Weeden in ’13 campaign was picking up momentum and that the Browns should turn their focus to filling other positions on the roster.

In March, the signing of backup quarterback Jason Campbell helped to solidify the campaign.

The Browns resisted the urge to do anything crazy in April’s NFL Draft.

At the start of training camp, we noted that having Norv Turner as offensive coordinator is a pretty good way to settle down the quarterback position.

In the first two preseason friendlies, Weeden has done everything you would expect an NFL starting quarterback to do.

So it was no surprise, really, when Browns coach Rob Chudzinski announced that Weeden will be the starting quarterback for the Browns this fall.

“It was important for me and for us to go through the process … that started in April in the meetings, carried out into OTAs on the field, the multiple minicamps that we had, the number of weeks in training camp that we had, as well as the first two preseason games so that we could get these guys and see them react to a lot of different situations that would come up and how they would handle them and so forth,” Chudzinski said in announcing the decision.

“Based on this process, Brandon has earned this job.  That’s extremely important to me that he did.  He has gained my complete trust.  He has gained his teammates complete trust and this organization’s trust.  We are all behind him and we will all be there to support him.”

Good job, coach. But next time, save yourself a lot of time and headaches and just ask us. We’re here for you.
