For one day, (almost) everyone in Brownstown is happy

For the first time in almost a year, Cleveland work up Monday morning to a victory by the Cleveland Browns.

Like most things in life, there was good and bad on display Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium, but for one day, at least, the Browns were able to overcome the bad and walk out with a win. In beating the Cincinnati Bengals, the Browns snapped franchise-record-tying 11-game losing streak, as well as a 12-game losing streak in the AFC North, and gaves Brown coach Pat Shurmur his first division win.

Browns send Randy Lerner out on a winning note

The Cleveland Browns gave outgoing owner Randy Lerner the perfect parting gift on Sunday, beating the Cincinnati Bengals for Cleveland’s first win of the season.

The victory also snaps a franchise-record-tying 11 game losing streak, as well as a 12-game losing streak in the AFC North, and gives Browns coach Pat Shurmur his first division win.

“I’ve seen this team improve,” Shurmur said. “We all know this is a winning business so now we can quantify how this improvement points to winning.”

Much as the Buffalo and New York games were team losses, this was a team win.

Browns vs. Bengals – Week 6

The Cleveland Browns return home to take on the Cincinnati Bengals in the final game under the ownership of Randy Lerner.

The Browns are facing the prospect of not only losing their 13th consecutive game in the AFC North Division, but their 12th consecutive game overall – which would be a franchise record.

Much has been made of the Browns losing 11 games in a row, primarily because that is really bad, but because they have come consecutively, it feels even worse.

“Our focus is to win the next game,” Browns coach Pat Shurmur said. “(The losing streak), it’s not a motivator. What’s a motivator is going out and winning a division game at home.”

Having proper motivation is a good start, but is that enough?

Browns not smelling the sweet scent of success

After their loss on Sunday, the Cleveland Browns are now 0-5 on the season, losers of a franchise-record 11 consecutive games.

The Browns are also the only team left in the National Football League that does not have a win this season. They have also lost 22 of their last 26 games dating back to the end of the 2010 season and 37 of their last 51 since the start of the 2009 season.

Browns left with no place to hide in loss to Giants

The Cleveland Browns fell to 0-5 on the season on Sunday, as the New York Giants ran through them and over them in a 41-27 defeat that really wasn’t that close.

The 0-5 start is the first time the Browns have pulled that off since the expansion team in 1999 and they have now lost 11 games in a row, tying a franchise record.

It was like a Bruce Springsteen lyric come to life:

The highways jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Everybody’s out on the run tonight but there’s no place left to hide

Browns vs. Giants – Week 5

The Cleveland Browns return to action on Sunday, heading to the Big Apple (well, the swamps of New Jersey) to take on the New York Giants.

The Browns are looking to avoid their first 0-5 start since the expansion year of 1999.

On paper, pretty much everyone is chalking this game up to the Giants. They are the defending Super Bowl champions, the Browns are 0-4, no sweat.

But there are matchups that the Browns could potentially exploit and the Giants are known to leg an egg or two each season (see their two losses to the Redskins last year).

We could have had it all: Cleveland ’95 A Football Life

While watching the NFL Network’s presentation of Cleveland ’95: A Football Life on Wednesday night, we couldn’t help but think that Adele’s Rolling in the Deep would have made a perfect backdrop to the program.

The show did a good job highlighting the various staff members that Bill Belichick collected in his five years in Cleveland and the difficult circumstances they worked under – especially that last year.

The producers never really delivered, though, on the premise that the Browns would have unquestionably won a championship if the team never moved to Baltimore and Belichick would have been allowed to finish what he started.

Likes, Dislikes, Hopes & Fears: Browns at the quarter mark

After playing four games in the span of 18 days, the Cleveland Browns find themselves at the quarter-mark of the 2012 NFL season.

The Browns are 0-4 for the second time in the last four years;  the last time the Browns started the season this poorly, in 2009, they were outscored by 69 points in the first four games (an average of 17.25 points a game); while this year the four losses have come by a total of just 25 points.

While 0-4 is not what you want to see from the guys in Orange and Brown, things are certainly better than they were in 2009 – maybe not playoff-caliber better, but better nonetheless.

What a week, Browns fans

It’s going to be one heck of a week for fans of the Cleveland Browns.

First off is tonight’s premiere at 8 of the latest 30 for 30 documentary from ESPN, Broke, which looks at the factors that can drain the bank accounts of professional athletes.

And who is one of those athletes, you ask? None other than Bernie Kosar, one of the most beloved players in Browns history.

Browns battle but still beaten by Baltimore

The battling Cleveland Browns dealt with rainy weather, heavy balls and the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night at M&T Bank Stadium.

And while the Browns gave a better effort than they did just four days prior, they still ended the night on the wrong end of the scoreboard, falling to 0-4 on the season after a 23-16 loss to the Ravens.

We know there are no moral victories and all that, but the fact that the Browns had a chance to tie the game at the end is a positive. The Ravens are a Super Bowl contender that has won 12 consecutive home games and 20-of-21 overall at home. After spending all week hearing about how the Browns were going to be embarrassed on national TV, it was good to see the Browns hang with the Ravens as best they could.
