If Tennessee really wants Jon Gruden, they can have him

We woke up this morning to the “report” that Jon Gruden will be the next football coach at the University of Tennessee, thanks in part to Cleveland Browns owner – and UT supporter – James Haslam.

According to WREG in Memphis, Gruden has a “contract offer in hand” from the Volunteers and the deal is sweetened by an offer – which reportedly would not past muster with the both the NCAA and the NFL – from Haslam for an ownership stake in the Browns.

The Browns have denied the report, with vice president of media relations Neal Gulkis issuing the following statement: “Jimmy Haslam has no involvement in the University of Tennessee head coaching search, and the report that Jon Gruden would potentially have an ownership stake in the Browns is completely erroneous.”

The curtain drops on the Big Show in Cleveland

The Mike Holmgren era has officially come to a close, with Holmgren announcing that Friday will be his last day on the job as “official” president of the Cleveland Browns.

Holmgren has been unofficially off the job ever since Joe Banner took over as CEO (some would say he’s been off since being hired by former owner Randy Lerner almost three years ago).

“This is a great football city,” Holmgren said. “All of the things I said in my opening press conference came true in that way and I fully expect the team to do great things in the future. Those who have been covering the team for a long time can really enjoy it.

Browns take down the Steelers

For more than 59 minutes on Sunday, it seemed like the Cleveland Browns were going to find a way to lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After losing 23 of the past 27 games against the Steelers, it was no surprise that the agita level of Browns fans everywhere was on the rise as the game went along and, despite forcing eight Pittsburgh turnovers, the Browns could never deliver the knockout punch. And as Reggie Hodges lined up to punt with 19 seconds to go, the game still seemed very much in doubt.

But once Hodges’ punt went out of bounds at the Steelers’ three-yard line, it truly was game over.

Final score: Cleveland 20, Pittsburgh 14.

Browns vs. Steelers – Week 12

The Cleveland Browns come back home on Sunday to face the Pittsburgh Steelers in a divisional “rivalry” game.

Dating back to 1994, the Browns are just 2-13 at home against the Steelers and will be facing Pittsburgh’s third-string quarterback, Charlie Batch.

The team was also planning to hand out inflatable white flags to every fan in attendance, only the greatest game day promotion since the Cleveland Indians passed out deodorant for a Mother’s Day game in the 1960s, but wisely though better of it and canceled the promotion late Saturday afternoon.

Now that the Browns have cleared that up, what could possibly go wrong against the Steelers?

Let’s find out at The Cleveland Fan.

Are we all watching the same Browns game as everyone else?

Another week and another loss for the “battling” Cleveland Browns.

For the fifth time this season, the Browns lost by seven points or less. That’s certainly better than 2009 and 2010, when Cleveland was losing games by 31 points, 28 points, 24 points and 32 points.

But does close really matter when you are 2-8? Are these close games a sign of a team that is (slowly) maturing? Or are they a team that can make just enough plays to stay close but can never make the play to win?

Some say it’s the coaching; others claim the coaching is fine.

Some say quarterback Brandon Weeden is the problem; others say he’s going to be fine.

The whole thing has us terribly vexed.

The truth is out there somewhere, Browns fans, let’s see if we can start finding some answers at The Cleveland Fan.

Browns have a bad day in Big D

There will be lots of debate this week after the Cleveland Browns most recent loss, a 23-20 overtime setback to the Dallas Cowboys.

Talk about Pat Shurmur’s future as head coach. Talk about Brandon Weeden’s future as starting quarterback. Talk about Miles Austin’s fumble in overtime that was ruled an incomplete pass. Talk about another game that got away from the Browns in another season that is going to end like so many seasons before it.

“You can’t look at this team and say we don’t play hard or we don’t fight,” quarterback Brandon Weeden said. “We just haven’t been able to finish lately.”

Yeah, Brandon, we know.

Browns vs. Cowboys – Week 11

The Cleveland Browns come off the bye and head to Texas to take on the Dallas Cowboys.

With seven games left in the season, and some potential wins there for the taking, how will the players and coaches respond as they are under the continued microscope of owner James Haslam and CEO Joe Banner?

Can the Browns also earn their first road win since Week 2 of last year?

Let’s see if we can find some answers at The Cleveland Fan.

Why are Browns fans upset with Josh Cribbs?

Judging by our timeline on Twitter Friday afternoon we are probably in the minority on this subject, but here goes:

Is Josh Cribbs’ desire to have a bigger role in the Cleveland Browns offense really a bad thing?

The Browns have a player who wants to be involved in the offense, who thinks he can help out on the field and … that’s supposed to be a bad thing? We’ve seen so many players come through town and dog it in the past 13 years – Gerard Warren, Quincy Morgan, Baryon Edwards and William Green quickly come to mind – that to hear a player speak up and want to take on more responsibility is refreshing.

So should Cribbs have a greater role in the offense over the final seven games of the season?

We answer that at The Cleveland Fan.

Browns returning to where it all started falling apart

The Cleveland Browns return to Dallas on Sunday to take on the Cowboys for the first time on the road since Week 2 of the 2004 NFL season.

And it was that day that, in a lot of ways, sent the Browns into a downward spiral that they are still trying to recover from. Read more…

Browns at the bye: Are things half-full or half-empty?

The Cleveland Browns are currently enjoying their bye week, sitting in last place of the AFC North with a 2-7 record.

Through the first half of the season the Browns have missed numerous opportunities to improve on their record. Missed plays against Cincinnati and Indianapolis, a blown lead against the Giants, and mistakes at the wrong time have all helped contribute to the current situation.

Of course, in the NFL you are what your record says you are and the reason teams are 2-7 is because they make the kind of mistake the Browns have made through the first nine weeks of the season.

“What’s nice about the bye week is, it’s about the Browns,” Browns coach Pat Shurmur said. “It’s about whoever your team is. You focus on, ‘what can we do better as we move forward?’ We’re just getting ourselves ready to go as we move forward.”

With a Sunday free of everyone’s anxiety-producing favorite team, let’s take a look at the Browns with a glass half-full/half-empty take.
