£50m for Luis Suárez? Yes please!

If the reports are true and Real Madrid or Atletico are willing to cut a check for £50m for striker Luis Suárez, then there is only one thing that Liverpool needs to do: not hang up the phone until the deal is complete.

The mecurial Suárez, who this season became more trouble than he is worth despite scoring 23 goals, let it be known on Friday that he wants out of Liverpool, out of the Premier League and out of England. And as long as someone is willing to pay the price, Liverpool should do everything it can to grant him his wish.

Where does Liverpool go from here?

Liverpool ended the Premier League season on Sunday with a 1-0 win over relegated Queens Park Rangers.

The Reds close out Brendan Rodgers’ first season in charge in seventh place in the league table with 61 points. That represents a nine-point improvement over last year’s finish and the club’s highest point total in three years.

With the season now in the books, the fourth consecutive year without a spot in the Champions League, the question becomes what will the squad look like when they return in August for the new campaign.

Time for Liverpool to start thinking about next season

Well, that didn’t last very long.

A week ago, Liverpool pulled of its fourth consecutive win, an exciting victory against Tottenham Hotspur, to give fans hope that, somehow, someway, the Reds would find a way to grab a surprise fourth-place spot in the Premier League table.

On Saturday, Southampton – a team that is battling to stay out of the relegation zone – pretty much shut the door on that hope, posting a 3-1 win before a record Premier League crowd at St Mary’s of 32,070.

The loss drops the Reds seven points behind fourth-place Chelsea, which has two games in hand. Even if Liverpool were to win out, the most points they can finish with are 69, meaning Chelsea just has to win six of its final 10 games to keep Liverpool out of a Champions League spot.

Liverpool finally gets it done; now it gets interesting

Liverpool finally earned a win over a top-four team under Brendan Rodgers, beating Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday at Anfield.

And in the process, the Reds made sure the final nine games of the season are going to be interesting.

Steven Gerrard’s goal on a penalty kick at the 81-minute mark helped Liverpool rally back for their third league win in a row and move within two points of Arsenal for fifth and within seven points of fourth-place Chelsea (although both the Gunners and the Blues have a game in hand).

Balls!

Liverpool is out of the Europa League despite a 3-1 win on Thursday against Zenit St. Petersburg.

While the win left the team’s tied 3-3 on aggregate, Zenit advances on away goals.

It’s doubling disappointing because the goal that ultimately did in the Reds came when Jamie Carragher, playing in what turned out to be the final European match of his career, misplayed a back pass that led to an easy goal by Zenit’s Hulk just 19 minutes into the game.

‘I thought we were incredible tonight,” Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. “Obviously we were two down from the first leg and to concede again, at 3-0 you might have thought the tie was over and done with. ‘But we showed real character and quality tonight to get three goals, and we totally dominated the game, controlled the game and should have had a penalty.”

Yeah, should of, would of. How very Cleveland of them.

At one time we thought we chose Liverpool as a team to follow. It’s games like this, however, that make us realize that Liverpool probably chose us.

Carragher one of the good ones

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher announced on Thursday that after 16 seasons and more than 700 appearances with his hometown club, he will retire.

“I’m making this announcement now because I don’t want the manager or the club to be answering questions on my future when I’ve already decided what I am going to do,” Carragher said in a statement. “I will be fully committed between now and the end of the season to doing the very best for Liverpool, as I have done my entire career since joining aged just nine years old.

“It has been a privilege and an honour to represent this great club for as long as I have and I am immensely proud to have done so and thankful for all the support I have had. There are many memories I want to share and people to thank, but now is not the time for that.

“I won’t be making any further comment on this decision until the end of the season; all our focus and concentration should be on achieving the best possible finish in the league this season and trying to win the last remaining trophy we are competing in.”

Modell … out!

The Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee made its choices on Saturday and the 2013 class includes three players who made it on their first try, a wide receiver who waited a number of years and one head coach.

And no Art Modell.

Elected this year were offensive linemen Larry Allen and Jonathan Ogden, wide receiver Cris Carter, defensive tackle Warren Sapp and head coach Bill Parcells.

And no Art Modell.

There were also two senior nominees elected, defensive tackle Curly Culp and linebacker Dave Robinson.

Cleveland sports in 2012 – Third Quarter

So 2012 has come and gone without another championship from any of Cleveland’s teams.

While there were no titles to celebrate, there were still plenty of stories, from firings to trades, to too many losses and too few wins.

Our look at the year in Cleveland sports continues with the second quarter of the year – from the opening of the Indians season, to the NFL Draft and NBA Draft and everything else that makes Cleveland sports such a joy to follow.
