In Cleveland, hope dies last

Masteron, Bauer distract from Tribe’s anemic offense

masterson double headerLost in the fan euphoria over the Cleveland Indians splitting a doubleheader with the New York Yankees on Monday is the fact that the Tribe offense was embarrassingly bad.

One run over 18 innings of play? That’s all they can get with New York starting David Phelps and Vidal Nuno? And fans are supposed to be happy that the Tribe earned a split against a Yankee team that is playing without Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira?

Wow, talk about low expectations. (Or maybe we are just not being realistic in our expectations.)

Browns remain undefeated in rookie minicamps

mingo browns rookie campFor the 15th consecutive year the Cleveland Browns simply owned their rookie minicamp.

From Barkevious Mingo’s sleek frame, to Leon McFadden doing things, to the impressive performances by Jamoris Slaughter and Chris Faulk on the stationary bikes, it was all sunshine and rainbows for the guys in Orange and Brown.

“It’s really nice to get a chance to see them, get out with them for the first time and actually see them on the field and see what they can do and have our coaches around to get to know them,” coach Rob Chudzinski said after Friday’s opening session.

Browns draft room, Haslam’s woes, defense and UDFAs

2013_03_browns_lombardi_talkGrantland published an interesting article today about Chuck Klosterman’s visit to Berea to get a look inside the Cleveland Browns draft room during last month’s NFL Draft.

It is a good but not very revealing read, primarily because of the absurd level of secrecy that envelopes Browns headquarters. The new brain trust has apparently determined that operatives from Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cincinnati are working overtime to steal the secrets of a perennial 5-11 team. (Mike Lombardi went as far as erasing Barkevious Mingo’s name from a white board before a member of the Browns IT department was allowed to enter the room.)

Other tidbits included Lombardi questioning Klosterman about which font would be used for the story, telling an inane story about the kind of typewriter author Robert Caro uses, and going on about “the candle problem.”

We’ve seen this Tribe movie before – or have we?

-2f6bf56aafbf5174The Cleveland Indians are just a little more than one month into the 2013 season and at times it feels as if we’ve seen this movie before.

But is this the third film in a trilogy of disappointment or the film that reboots a once successful franchise?

The Tribe has played entertaining baseball through the first month of the season, and while it feels like they are a better team this year, a quick check of the standings tells a slightly different story. The Indians are 16-14 heading into tonight’s game against Oakland and riding a streak that has seen them win eight out of nine. They are currently in third place, 3 games out of first.

At this time last year the Indians were in first place with a 17-12 record and 2 games up on Detroit; in 2011 they were 22-11 and in first place by 4.5 games.

And we all know how those seasons came to an end.

So what is going to keep the bottom from falling out on the Tribe for the third consecutive year?

What should the Browns do with Armonty Bryant?

nfl-combine-football.jpeg21-1280x960Lots of talk over the past 24 hours about what the Cleveland Browns should do with Armonty Bryant after the news broke that the seventh-round draft pick had plead no contest to a misdemeanor DUI charges.

This latest incident follows one last fall where Bryant was sentenced for selling $20 worth of marijuana to an undercover police officer.

So what should the Browns do?

We’ve seen reactions on both sides, from those who take a “boys will be boys” attitude to calls for the Browns to cut him immediately.

We think the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

Picking up the pieces of the latest Browns draft

26-Oct-10_98597085CG118_Cleveland_Bro_crop_450x500So six Cleveland Browns fans walk into a bar and start talking about the aftermath of the Browns recent draft picks.

Did the Browns make the right moves? Are we doomed to another in a seemingly endless loop of 5-11 seasons? What happens when Browns fans stop being polite and start getting  real? (Except for the not polite part? And does that reference make us look old?)

Find out in the latest installment of Five Questions in Five Minutes at Cleveland Reboot where we join a virtual roundtable for Browns draft talk with Jim Kanicki, Jeff Rich, Mike Krupka, Barry McBride and Chris Pokorny.

And, no, seventh-round draft choice Armonty Bryant was not our designated driver. What, too soon?

ESPN turns its 30 for 30 focus on Cleveland sports fans

ESPN-30-for-30ESPN has decided that Cleveland sports are ready for a closeup with the announcement that the network is making a 30 for 30 film about Cleveland sports fans.

Well this is certainly going to be fun.

All kidding aside, this has the potential to be interesting – we can’t really say entertaining, now can we? – and there is little doubt it will be well produced. We haven’t watched all of the films so far in the series, some of the subject matter just wasn’t that interesting, but the ones we have seen have all been very well done. According to ESPN’s website, the documentary series is “similar to feature-length films in that each piece represents a specific point of view of the filmmaker and is a reflection of how they blend the narrative with their own visual style.”

Browns close out an interesting weekend at the NFL Draft

2013_04_browns_bark_mingoThe Cleveland Browns had an “interesting” weekend during the three-day NFL Draft – and that may be understating things a bit.

Once all seven rounds were completed, the Browns turned their seven draft picks into outsider linebacker Barkevious Mingo, cornerback Leon McFadden, safety Jamoris Slaughter, defensive end Armonty Bryant, offensive tackle Garrett Gilkey and a bucket load of draft picks in the 2014 NFL Draft. And they added veteran wide receiver Davone Bess in a trade with Miami

It was quite the weekend, so let’s recap what happened over at The Cleveland Fan.

Cleveland Browns NFL Draft preview

2013_04_browns_mingoToday is the day that Cleveland Browns fans have been waiting for.

After months of hearing about big boards, fluid hips, short arms, tight ankles, combines, Pro days, 40-yard dash times, game changers, sleepers, and more mock drafts from the likes of Mel Kiper, Todd McShay and Mike Mayock, it is finally time for the NFL Draft.

Heading into tonight’s action, the Browns hold the No. 6 pick in the first round, as well as pick Nos. 68, 104, 139, 164, 175 and 227.

This will be the first draft for the team under CEO Joe Banner, the first draft with general manager Mike Lombardi in the building since 1996, and the first draft in franchise history where the owner is facing a federal investigation for his business practices.

In other words, just another day in Cleveland sports.

So what will the Browns do when they finally get on the clock at approximately 9:30 p.m.?

Your 2013 NFL Draft preview starts … now at The Cleveland Fan.

Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back

mike brown cavsWelcome back,
To that same old place that you laughed about.
Well the names have all changed since you hung around,
But those dreams have remained and they’re turned around.
Who’d have thought they’d lead ya (Who’d have thought they’d lead ya)
Here where we need ya (Here where we need ya) …

The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly planning to re-hire Mike Brown as coach, three years after they fired him.

Brown and the Cavs have reached a “handshake agreement” according to The Beacon Journal and the hiring could become official as early as Wednesday.

We certainly didn’t see that one coming.
