Liverpool need to take three points off Spurs on Sunday

brendan-rodgers_2333533bThe heat is on Liverpool on Sunday when they take the pitch at White Heart Lane against Tottenham Hotspur.

Thanks to Manchester City’s win against Arsenal on Saturday, Liverpool has a chance to cut the Gunners lead to just two points. But with Chelsea and Everton also winning on Saturday, the Reds need to come home with three points against Spurs or run the risk of falling out of the top four.

That may be easier said than done for a squad that has taken just nine points in seven away matches this season. And Liverpool has lost six consecutive matches at White Hart Lane. However, Spurs have won just one of their last five league matches at home and have scored just seven goals in their past seven home games.

Yeah, we don’t know either

1995 NFL Pro BowlWe came across this story today from Business Insider Australia (h/t @PhilHecken) about the mascots that the NFL used during the 1995 Pro Bowl game.

Now, admittedly, we don’t watch much if any of the Pro Bowl, but we do check in a little during the game and generally catch the highlights. But we have absolutely zero recollection of this mascot supposedly representing the Cleveland Browns.

We’re not even sure what it is supposed to be. Yeah, sure, it’s a “dawg” but other than that, what the heck is going on? Why is he so sad? And why does he have a Mike Holmgren-like mustache almost 20 years before Holmgren came to Cleveland?

Does anyone remember this?

Weird.

World Cup draw may not be so bad for USMNT after all

world cup drawIt was a rough day for the U.S. Men’s National Team when the groups were drawn on Friday for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

The U.S. landed in Group G with Germany (ranked No. 2 in the world) Portugal (No. 5) and Ghana (No. 24).

It’s not going to be easy, but after thinking about it over the weekend, it may not be as bad for the U.S. as we first feared.

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann took the approach that if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.

From the editor’s notebook …

Chris DavisSaturday was one of those days that make college football so enjoyable.

The fun actually started on Friday night, when Marcus Mariota got some of his swag back, leading Oregon to a game-winning touchdown with 29 seconds left to beat Oregon State. (And while we have been a proponent of the Browns exploring a chrome orange helmet, we may have to reassess our position after seeing Oregon State’s helmets. Although they may just have had too much red in them.)

That was just a prelude to Saturday, when the game of the year took place between Alabama and Auburn. The Tigers took down the defending champs in the most improbable way possible (and aided a bit by Alabama coach Nick Saban’s hubris), as Auburn’s Chris Davis returned a missed 57-yard field goal the entire length of the field for the game-winning score on the final play of the game.

From the editor’s notebook …

thumb.aspxIt has been a rough year for the Kent State Golden Flashes in football, which is why it was nice to see the team close out the season with a big win Tuesday night against Ohio University.

The Flashes ripped off 34 consecutive points to close out the 44-13 win over the Bobcats (with the play of the game clearly being Nate Terhune’s touchdown on a fake punt). And while a 4-8 record and fifth place finish in the MAC’s East Division is not the way that first-year coach Paul Haynes wanted to see the season go, finishing the year with consecutive wins should help to ease the sting a bit.

“To send our seniors out the right way on a two-game winning streak is good for our program going into the off-season,” Haynes said. “It’s very important, because we can sit there and break them down a little bit more in the off-season, and then we will build them back up. For them to have the confidence to play so well is huge going into the off-season.”

cavs no panicJust what the heck is going on with the Cleveland Cavaliers?

A 3-6 record … losers of six in a row on the road … owners of the second-worst point differential in the NBA … 27th in points per game … a starting back court of Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters that is shooting a combined 39 percent from the field … a No. 1 overall pick in Anthony Bennett who has made four field goals total in eight games … it all makes our head hurt.

So, is it time to start worrying?

We will go with … sort of.

Welcome back, Luis

And with him could come a boost to Liverpool’s chances to stay in the title race this season.

We never thought we would be writing this, but we are glad to see Suárez back on the pitch in a Liverpool shirt.

From the editor’s notebook …

Nick HagadoneFor a few weeks now we’ve been wondering if the Cleveland Indians have one last run in them to stay in the playoff race or if it’s time to call the season.

The last week may have provided us with the answer.

A three-game sweep in Atlanta … a weekend to forget in Detroit that was saved only by an improbably Mike Aviles grand slam … a series-opening loss to Baltimore where Justin Masterson left in the second inning with an injury … and, well, we’re ready to call it a season.

Sure, it is conceivable that the Tribe can stay in the playoff race (just like it is conceivable that the Cleveland Browns could win the AFC North Division this fall), with the hope resting on the weak slate of opponents left on the schedule once Baltimore leaves town. After all, the Tribe is “only” four games out of a Wild Card spot (but that could change for the negative by the time the Orioles leave town).

Daniel Sturridge benefitting from Luis Suárez’ absence

Daniel_Sturridge_goalTwo games into the season, Liverpool finds itself tied for second place near the top of the Premier League table with Tottenham Hotspur. It’s the first time the Red have won their first two games of the season since 2008-09, a campaign that saw them finish in second place with 86 points.

More importantly, the club is now 5-0-1 during the first six games they have played without Luis Suárez, who has four more matches left on his suspension for biting Branislav Ivanovic. It would be a bit daft to try and use Liverpool’s short-term run of success to build an argument that they are better off without the talented but mercurial Suárez.

But Liverpool is winning and, in the process, is learning a valuable lesson – how to win without Suárez. And no one is taking that lesson to heart more than Daniel Sturridge.

A look at a few items that warrant attention but not necessarily a full post …

Just like the Tribe “Drew” it up

Drew StubbsIt wasn’t always pretty, see their four errors, but the Cleveland Indians pulled out the series win on Sunday as Drew Stubbs hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and and the Tribe went on to win 3-1.

“I felt like we were trying every way we could to give it away,” Stubbs said. “We hung in there, we battled and were able to do enough to win. An ugly win is as good as a pretty win.”

After going 6-3 on their recent road trip, the Indians came home and took two-of-three from the Twins. That leaves the Indians heading into Monday’s off day just 1.5 games behind Oakland in the chase for a Wild Card spot.

It doesn’t seem to matter if the national media write off the Indians, or if the fans can’t seem to get behind this squad, this team seems determined to find a way to stay in the playoff hunt.
