Andy Reid to be the next coach of the Cleveland Browns

andy reid brownsAre you ready for the Andy Reid era, Browns fans?

Because it seems pretty likely that Reid could be working the sidelines at Cleveland Browns Stadium next season – especially if Browns CEO Joe Banner reads the latest from Grantland’s Bill Barnwell.

Barnwell lays out a pretty good case that Reid hasn’t been that bad of a coach in Philadelphia. Some of the highlights include: Read more…

If Sunday is the last home game for Josh Cribbs, it’s been a blast

cribbstbWe knew that Sunday’s game against Washington was the last home game on the schedule for the Cleveland Browns, but we hadn’t thought about how it could also be the last home game for Josh Cribbs in Orange and Brown until reading this post at WFNY.

It seems likely that Cribbs will be playing elsewhere next season. He will be 30 by the time the 2013 NFL season begins and, after eight years in the league, he will be looking for what will certainly be the final “big money” contract of his playing career. It seems just as likely that CEO Joe Banner will not be willing to be the highest bidder for Cribbs, especially as Banner has no emotional connection to the player.

And that’s too bad. While we don’t expect Banner to break the bank for Cribbs, it will be hard to watch if Cribbs is wearing a different uniform next season.

Did the Indians choose wisely in their latest pitching deal?

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at Cleveland IndiansThe Cleveland Indians finally decided to join the Hot Stove party on Tuesday, dealing right fielder Shin-Soo Choo to Cincinnati in a three-team, nine-player trade.

When it was all done and dusted, the Tribe ended up with pitchers Trevor Bauer (the third overall pick in the 2011 draft), Matt Albers and Bryan Shaw from Arizona, along with center field Drew Stubbs from the Reds.

The Indians have received almost universal approval for the deal – ESPN’s Buster Olney referred to the deal as “stunning” – but when one team is presented as clearly being on the “winning” side of a trade, it gives us pause.

And there are still a lot of questions surrounding the players the Indians received in return, even if the team wants fans to believe otherwise.

Liverpool apologizes for trying to improve their team

Clint DempseyIn one of those odd, British-only type stories, Liverpool officials have issued a formal apology for trying to improve the team over the summer by expressing interest in Clint Dempsey.

According to The Daily Mail, Liverpool co-owner Tom Werner visited Craven Cottage to apologize to Fulham chairman Mohadem Al Fayed for wanting to bring the American international to Anfield.

The visit was followed by a letter from Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre that said the club’s actions were “wrong” and should “never have occurred.”

Is the Browns winning streak one that fans can believe in?

Trent RichardsonWhen is a winning streak something that fans can believe in, rather than just a mirage that helps to mask a team’s ongoing problems?

Just as importantly, how can you tell the difference?

That’s the question facing everyone surrounding the Cleveland Browns, from the front office to the locker room all the way down to the fans.

This is the fourth time that the Browns have won at least three consecutive games since returning to the NFL in 1999. And, so far, each streak has two things in common.

Browns take down the Chiefs for third straight win

temp4X9E2532--nfl_mezz_1280_1024It was all over after the first offensive play of the game.

The Kansas City Chiefs just didn’t know it.

After allowing Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles to go 80 yards for a touchdown on the game’s opening play, the Cleveland Browns shut down the predictable Brian Daboll offense on the way to their third consecutive win.

Just like the Pittsburgh game two weeks ago, the Browns fell behind quickly, leaving fans to lose it and declare the game over. And just like the Steelers game, there was still plenty of time remaining and the Browns continued to turn into a team that finds a way to win, rather than one that finds a way to lose.

Head over to The Cleveland Fan for all the details.

Browns vs. Chiefs – Week 14

2012_12_browns_chiefs_previewThe Cleveland Browns return home on Sunday to face the Kansas City Chiefs and look for their first winning streak of more than two games since 2009.

Following wins against Pittsburgh and Oakland, the Browns are looking to continue a turnaround that has seen them go 4-3 after starting the year at 0-5.

It’s appropriate that this game is being played during the holiday season, as the Chiefs are bringing the ghosts of Cleveland Browns past with them to the stadium. With Romeo Crennel, Brian Daboll and Maurice Carthon on the sidelines, and Brady Quinn and Peyton Hillis (maybe) on the field, it will be a cornucopia of memories for everyone involved, we’re sure.

This week’s entry, dealing with the Kansas City Chiefs and Mike Lombardi, can be found here.

Previous entries include the game with OaklandDallas and the bye week.

Check them out when you have a chance and thanks again to Dave for asking us to participate.

… the more they stay the same.

As the weeks went by this fall and Kent State built a 10-game winning streak, it became obvious that it was just a matter of when, not if, football coach Darrell Hazell would move to a bigger stage.

Well, it looks like we now know not only the when but the where.

ESPN is reporting that Hazell will be named Purdue’s new football coach on Wednesday, replacing the fired Danny Hope.

UPDATE: On Wednesday, Purdue made the announcement that Hazell will become the school’s 35th football coach.

Purdue? Really?

Browns take down the Raiders, but what does it mean?

Josh Gordon, Ron BartellThe Cleveland Browns headed to Oakland on Sunday with many of their fans and the rest of the NFL questioning whether or not they have what it takes to actually finish a game when given the opportunity.

With 9:31 left in the game and holding a three-point lead, the Browns huddled on their own six-yard line with opportunity – and the Raiders defense – staring them in the face.

Quarterback Brandon Weeden shrug off what had been, up to that point, a rather unspectacular day to drive the Browns 94 yards in 14 plays, leading the Browns to a touchdown drive and effectively sealing the win.

So has this Browns team finally started to turn the corner?
