If Tennessee really wants Jon Gruden, they can have him

We woke up this morning to the “report” that Jon Gruden will be the next football coach at the University of Tennessee, thanks in part to Cleveland Browns owner – and UT supporter – James Haslam.

According to WREG in Memphis, Gruden has a “contract offer in hand” from the Volunteers and the deal is sweetened by an offer – which reportedly would not past muster with the both the NCAA and the NFL – from Haslam for an ownership stake in the Browns.

The Browns have denied the report, with vice president of media relations Neal Gulkis issuing the following statement: “Jimmy Haslam has no involvement in the University of Tennessee head coaching search, and the report that Jon Gruden would potentially have an ownership stake in the Browns is completely erroneous.”

The curtain drops on the Big Show in Cleveland

The Mike Holmgren era has officially come to a close, with Holmgren announcing that Friday will be his last day on the job as “official” president of the Cleveland Browns.

Holmgren has been unofficially off the job ever since Joe Banner took over as CEO (some would say he’s been off since being hired by former owner Randy Lerner almost three years ago).

“This is a great football city,” Holmgren said. “All of the things I said in my opening press conference came true in that way and I fully expect the team to do great things in the future. Those who have been covering the team for a long time can really enjoy it.

Are we all watching the same Browns game as everyone else?

Another week and another loss for the “battling” Cleveland Browns.

For the fifth time this season, the Browns lost by seven points or less. That’s certainly better than 2009 and 2010, when Cleveland was losing games by 31 points, 28 points, 24 points and 32 points.

But does close really matter when you are 2-8? Are these close games a sign of a team that is (slowly) maturing? Or are they a team that can make just enough plays to stay close but can never make the play to win?

Some say it’s the coaching; others claim the coaching is fine.

Some say quarterback Brandon Weeden is the problem; others say he’s going to be fine.

The whole thing has us terribly vexed.

Weeden looking to improve on Browns’ red zone woes

Good news for the Cleveland Browns as rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden says he will spend the bye week working to improve.

And he’s thinking touchdowns, not field goals.

“I didn’t really do my part throughout the entire game for four quarters (and) help this team get in the end zone (against Baltimore),” Weeden told the team’s website. “There are a lot of different things. I think you have to take pride in scoring touchdowns. We talk about three points sometimes isn’t bad, but you have to score touchdowns. Just making the things that are routine, doing them 100 percent all the time, being 100 percent on the things that are routine, that’s where the great quarterbacks become great. That’s why they’re so great; they do the things consistently all the time. That’s what I’m working toward.

Likes, Dislikes, Hopes & Fears: Browns at the quarter mark

After playing four games in the span of 18 days, the Cleveland Browns find themselves at the quarter-mark of the 2012 NFL season.

The Browns are 0-4 for the second time in the last four years;  the last time the Browns started the season this poorly, in 2009, they were outscored by 69 points in the first four games (an average of 17.25 points a game); while this year the four losses have come by a total of just 25 points.

While 0-4 is not what you want to see from the guys in Orange and Brown, things are certainly better than they were in 2009 – maybe not playoff-caliber better, but better nonetheless.

Ranking the rookie quarterbacks – Week 2 edition

Week 2 of the NFL season saw the five rookie starting quarterbacks all have very solid days, with three of the five coming out on the winning end of the scoreboard.

After combining to throw four touchdowns against 11 interceptions in Week 1, the group bounced back seven touchdowns against just one interception in Week 2.

Earning their first career NFL wins were Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck, Miami’s Ryan Tannehill and Seattle’s Russel Wilson; while Washington’s Robert Griffin III and Cleveland’s Brandon Weeden came out on the short end.

Let’s see how the group – four of whom were taken in the first round of the draft (with Wilson being the outlier) and will be linked together for not only this season but also their careers – rank after two weeks on the job.

Browns come up short on the road vs. Cincinnati

It was a day of big plays and big mistakes as the Cleveland Browns took on the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium.

In the end, however, the Browns made a few too many mistakes to overcome and lost to the Bengals, 34-27, to fall to 0-2 on the season. It was the Browns fourth consecutive loss to the Bengals and the 13th time in the last 16 meetings they have dropped the game to Cincinnati.

Browns vs. Bengals – Week 2

The winless Cleveland Browns travel to Cincinnati today to take on the winless Bengals in the 78th meeting of the so-called Battle of Ohio.

While much has been made of the fact that the Browns are 1-12 in opening games since 1999, they have actually been respectable in Week 2, going 6-7 in the same span – with four of those six wins coming against the Bengals. However, the Bengals have won three in a row in the series and six of the last seven meetings.

Are the Browns making the right play by sitting Weeden?

We’ve expected (and feared) that this day was coming for a few weeks now, but that still didn’t make it any easier when we heard the news

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden will sit out Thursday’s game against Chicago, the final preseason friendly on the schedule as well as the last opportunity for Weeden and the rest of the rookie-infused offense to work together at game speed.

The Browns are betting that Weeden will be ready for the Eagles in Week 1 with the least amount of time possible to prepare.

The worst-kept secret in the NFL

The Cleveland Browns made official on Monday what everyone has known since the night of April 27:

Brandon Weeden will be the starting quarterback this season.

“Brandon Weeden will start the Detroit game, and he’ll be our starter as we go forward here,” Browns coach Pat Shurmur told The Beacon Journal. “The No. 2 position will be determined based on how things play out here in training camp. Brandon’s the starter, and we’re moving forward. I think that’s the important thing. I’m not looking back. We’re committing and we’re rolling. We anticipate he’s gonna do a great job.
